Profile of Prof Judith Elizabeth Smith
Prof Judith Smith graduated from Edinburgh (BSc) and Cambridge (PhD) prior to undertaking post-doctoral research on malaria at Imperial College. She then took up a post at the University of Leeds where she built her research profile through bringing together molecular and evolutionary approaches in the study of parasites. Her work has contributed to understanding the diversity, transmission and pathogenesis of parasites ranging from, sex ratio distorting invertebrate pathogens to major zoonoses affecting humans and domesticated species. She is currently Head of the School of Environment and Life Sciences at the University of Salford where she is establishing a centre of excellence in the field of disease ecology. Professor Smith served on the Steering Group of the £14m NERC Post Genomics and Proteomics Thematic Programme and was recently appointed to the NERC Panel of Chairs
