Tom Stout

Tom completed his PhD at Thoroughbred Breeders Association Equine Fertility Unit in Newmarket under supervision of Professor W.R. ‘Twink’ Allen on ‘Maternal recognition of pregnancy in the mare’ from a HBLB scholarship / Dorothy Russell Havemeyer Foundation fellowship. From 1997 to 1999 he was lecturing in Animal Reproduction at Cambridge University Veterinary School before moving to Utrecht University in 1999 where he is a Professor of Equine Medicine and Reproduction. Since 2007 Tom has been an extraordinary Professor at Department of Production Animal Sciences, Onderstepoort Veterinary School, Pretoria, South Africa. Interests: Tom’s main area of interest is equine reproduction, in particular early embryonic development, early pregnancy loss and embryo-maternal interaction during implantation, consequences of perturbations during early pregnancy for subsequent development of the fetus/foal, assisted reproduction – refinement of techniques for gamete/embryo preservation and assisted breeding, stallion fertility; development of assays to more accurately assess / predict likely fertility or identify sperm based defects responsible for sub-fertility and wildlife reproduction – assisted breeding and contraception (especially in elephants).
