Cryptosporidium is an apicomplexan parasite and is a leading cause of diarrheal disease in young, malnourished children and the immunocompromised. Unfortunately there is no vaccine and there are no effective treatments. Since the adaption of CRISPR/Cas9 and in vivo models to "culture" Cryptosporidium were established, about a decade ago, our understanding of the basic biology of this parasite has rapidly expanded. I will present laboratory tools developed by the Pawlowic lab currently available for Cryptosporidiumresearch, and how they have impacted our understanding of parasite biology, host-pathogen interaction, and drug discovery.
