Discussion

This roundtable brings together artists, cultural workers, and scholars to discuss the intersections of contemporary protest and artistic expression in Georgia. In recent months, the country has witnessed sustained mass demonstrations against laws widely perceived as undermining democratic freedoms and aligning Georgia more closely with Russian-style authoritarian governance. Visual artists, filmmakers, musicians, and writers have played a critical role in shaping public discourse, mobilizing communities, and documenting dissent. Participants will explore how artistic practices—from street murals and protest performances to digital media campaigns—are amplifying calls for political change and forging new solidarities across generations. The discussion will also consider the risks and challenges faced by cultural producers in this context and reflect on how creative resistance both draws upon and reshapes narratives of national identity, European aspiration, and collective memory.
