This paper explores American media coverage of the Institute for the USA and Canada, established in the Soviet Union in 1967, as a pioneering research center on American studies. Drawing on articles from leading newspapers and magazines of the late 1960s, the study examines diverse reactions to this Soviet initiative. While some journalists were suspicious of the Institute, interpreting it only as a strategic tool for studying the United States during the Cold War, others saw potential for fostering mutual understanding and improving Soviet-American relations in context of détente.
