The presentation will approach feminist historical culture as an arena where both academics and activists contributed to the development of a sphere separated from the state where alternative identities and values could be articulated. The purposeof the presentation is to analyze historical narratives that dominated Russian feminist historical culture between 2010 and 2021 in order to shed light on the female identities promoted as alternatives to the patriarchal female ideals of the state. The aims of the presentation are: 1) to identify the axes of power that frame the feminist historical narratives; 2) to analyse interplay between Western and Soviet discourses within these narratives; 3) to analyse connections between the feminist historical narratives and the official historical narrative of contemporary Russia. Theoretically the project has its starting point in historical didactics and in intersectional perspective. Methods of text analysis, visual analysis and oral history will be employed. The presentation will provide new insights about the feminist historical culture and its development in Russia as well as about the inclusive power of the contemporary feminist movement and its ability to mobilize support and engage new activists. Due to transnational character of contemporary feminism, the study can also help us understand better the workings of feminist groups and civil society both in Eastern Europe and globally.
