Discussion

Claudia Dathe emphasizes the significance of poetry as a " medium for intellectual engagement with the war“" Since 2014, writers such as Liubov Yakimchuk, Iia Kiva, and Serhii Zhadan have articulated responses to the war of aggression perpetrated by Russia against Ukraine. Their poetry also adeptly addresses the subtler ramifications of the slow violence, encompassing the gradual but discernible shifts in both the environment and society.

This talk scrutinises various literary practices in response to the slow violence, particularly those at the confluence of poetry and art. It explores the sharing of poetry in intermedial settings, the presentation of poetic graffiti in public spaces, including those in occupied territories, and more. The focal period spans from 2014 to 2024, encompassing early responses concentrated on the conflict in Donbas and later ones following the full-scale invasion, exemplified in the works of Viktoriia Amelina, Iryna Tsilyk, Halyna Kruk, Pavlo Horobchuk, and Mariana Savka. The research delves into the strategies of resistance and resilience evidenced at various levels of poetic expression and in distinct literary practices, which have become pivotal in times of war.
