Discussion

The study is devoted to the linguistic issue of intercultural communication of South and East Slavs in the seventeenth century, which was facilitated by common or close language features in literary communication, common faith, and similarities of socio-political circumstances. The phenomenon of linguistic and cultural adaptation as one of the main problems of the pragmatic aspect of translation is considered in the translation of the cycle "Miracles of the Theotokos" by the Ukrainian writer and preacher  Yoanikiy Galyatovsky, carried out by Samuil Bakachich for the spiritual needs of the Orthodox Slavs in the Balkans. The term "linguistic-cultural adaptation" refers to the method of achieving the equivalence of the communicative goal in the original language and in the language of translation. The main attention is paid to  a set of translation transformations  and techniques aiming at adapting a foreign language text to the needs and perception of speakers of another language, taking into account extralinguistic factors. The choices of the translator are discussed vis-à-vis his thorough knowledge of linguistic specificities, theological issues, and mentality of the target readers/ listeners of his translation.
