This paper explores parental perspectives on the experiences of autistic children and the understanding of autism in Tajikistan, providing rare insight into autism in the cultural context of the region. Drawing on in-depth interviews with 17 parents of autistic children, this study examines parents' understanding of autism, their children’s everyday life, and the medical and educational resources accessible to them.
Through thematic coding, findings reveal a significant influence of cultural factors on shaping parents' perceptions of autism and on their children's experiences. This research highlights the unique challenges faced by autistic individuals and their families in Tajikistan and underscores the need for culturally responsive approaches in support services. The study contributes to a more nuanced understanding of autism within Central Asia and offers valuable perspectives on the intersection of culture and neurodiversity in underserved regions.
