Discussion

In my research I raise the question of the formation of Ukrainian cultural identity and specific mentality in the context of the European history, the level of influence of Italian, Polish cultures in the development of Ukrainian culture.

Pochayiv Monastery’s printing house was the center of Ukrainian Right Bank’s printing in the XVIII th - first quarter of the XIX th c. – more than 600 editions from 1734 until 1831. Religious activities of the Pochayiv Monastery synthesized the practices of the Orthodox and Uniate Churches.

Analysis of the book collection (library) of the Pochayiv Monastery from 1617 to the beginning of the XIX century gives us a basis to conclude that the reader's canon of Pochayiv monks, in general, did not differ from the canon of Catholic monastic libraries in Europe of that time. The selection of literature and textbooks was of particular importance in Basilian education and, in particular, in the Pochayiv school system. At the same time, it was reflected in the work of Pohayiv printing house, where original works were published, as well as translation literature of religious and moralistic character, catechisms, textbooks for missions and sermons.

Church-religious, cultural and educational activities of the Pochayiv Monastery witnessed the phenomenon of polymorphism in Ukrainian culture and eventually determined its role as an important center of inter-confessional relationships.
