Language ideology frequently features in political and social debates worldwide. There has been a trend towards a broader understanding of language ideology and its impact on sociopolitical life, language itself, and its usage, particularly regarding status and corpus language planning. The paper explores the ways language ideologies have developed in Ukraine since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022 and how they have affected the shaping of government’s language policy and planning (LPP). The analysis of language ideologies in Ukraine leads to a discussion of the complex inter-relationship between language ideology and language planning.
By providing examples from the language situation in Ukraine and examining how language ideologies, such as decolonialingualism, develop in a war-torn country, the paper focuses on identifying the dominant language ideologies and the role of English in Ukraine since February 2022. Applying textual analysis of the data, legislative acts, and other documents, the paper explores the development of post-colonial language planning in the country, with particular attention to decolonisation.
