Discussion
My paper will discuss the position of the German community in Bucharest at the beginning of the nineteenth century caught between the interests of the imperial agents active in the Wallachian Capital. Firstly, I will examine two ordinances from 1803 issued by the Austrian consular agent Merkelius and sent to the pastor of the evangelical community in Bucharest. The ordinances addressed issues connected to the good behavior of the Germans, subjects of the Austrian crown, with the main concern to avoid “scandals” and “obscenity.” However, the Bucharest Germans were also due to obey the laws of the country, the Poliyezordnungen, issued by the Wallachian Prince and the Russian officials in the country. Secondly, from the correspondence of pastor Klockner with the Austrian consular agents we can discern attitudes towards the political order and establishment.
