This presentation explores the political and the sensory layers of human interactions with bodies of water. We ask how swimming can be a decolonial act or a methodology, and we explore different modalities and experiences of swimming vis-à-vis imperial power structures. Case material includes swimming in the Narva river between Estonia and Russia, in the heavily guarded Baltic Sea of the Soviet era, and more. We combine historical analysis with autoethnography and artistic research.
