Customs and traditions play a significant role in shaping the spiritual and moral foundations of any nation. In Azerbaijan, as in other cultures, wedding rituals represent an essential part of the national heritage passed down through generations. However, each new generation faces societal changes, which lead to the renewal and transformation of these rituals. In recent decades, Azerbaijani wedding customs have undergone significant changes influenced by two major factors: the country's independence and the rapid processes of globalization.
One example of the revival of old traditions is the ritual of "khnyakhdy," the application of henna, which was almost forgotten during the Soviet period. This ritual symbolizes happiness and prosperity in marriage. At the same time, a completely new custom, borrowed from Western culture—the tossing of the bridal bouquet—has emerged. The ancient wedding dance "Vagzaly," which traditionally accompanies wedding ceremonies, continues to be preserved and harmoniously coexists with the modern musical rhythms preferred by the younger generations.
Thus, Azerbaijani wedding rituals today represent a unique blend of tradition and innovation, reflecting both historical heritage and contemporary cultural trends. This paper will analyze both traditional and modern Azerbaijani wedding rituals, exploring their symbolic meanings and the changes that have occurred in the context of social transformations.
