Discussion

The roundtable focuses on contributions to the book Minorities at War: Cultural Identity and Resilience in Ukraine, published by Routledge in 2025. The book centers on Ukraine's ethno-cultural minorities, who over the past ten years have experienced forced displacement, emigration, the destruction of their traditional ways of life, and transformations in identity and language behavior. It explores the impact of Russia’s war against Ukraine, which began with the annexation of Crimea and the war in Donbas in 2014, and examines what happens to the cultural identities of minority groups under such circumstances. The book also investigates the mechanisms and components of their resilience in times of crisis. Key themes addressed include the collective memory and coping strategies of minorities, their mobilization and humanitarian efforts, the effects of forced displacement, and the preservation of identity. While most works on the Russo-Ukrainian war focus on its international context, causes, and the humanitarian consequences for Ukraine and the region as a whole, this book aims to bring attention to the often-overlooked experiences of ethno-cultural minorities during such conflicts.
