The discourse on Ukraine's recovery often emphasizes the reconstruction of hard infrastructure and the restoration of production capacities. However, this focus overlooks the profound human dimension. The war has not only devastated the nation's physical landscape but has also inflicted unprecedented losses in human capital, exacerbating inequalities across multiple dimensions, including regional disparities, wealth distribution, and access to essential services such as healthcare, education, food, electricity, and clean water.
Amid these challenges, the experiences of displaced Ukrainians, particularly women, reveal the deeper economic, social and psychological impacts of the conflict. By examining their views based on 70 in-depth interviews and a quantitative survey of 1000 respondents conducted in collaboration with Dr Marnie Howlett, the presentation will uncover the nuanced and often conflicted emotions these women experience regarding the future of Ukraine and its recovery as well as underscore the immense challenges that must be addressed to foster social cohesion and ensure an inclusive recovery in Ukraine.
