The development of Russian Orientalism has been intertwined with the formation of Russian Empire. Orientalism was initially introduced from the European academic community to Russia. German intellectuals played an important role, and scholars represented by V. V. Barthold brought Russian Orientlaism to the advanced international level. Based on previous scholarship, this article aims at examining the interaction between Russian Orientalism and the domestic and international politcs in the late Tsarist period (mid-nineteenth century to 1917), focusing on the views of Orientalists on Russia's frontier policies and the relationship between Eastern and Western civilizations.
