Discussion

Anna Maslenova will examine the English translation of the poem ‘K Detiam’ (1839) by Slavophile poet and philosopher Aleksei Khomiakov, written in response to the death of his two young sons. In 1844, this poem was translated by the High Anglican theologian William Palmer, a translation that sparked a significant correspondence between Khomiakov and Palmer, centred on bridging the chasm between the Eastern Orthodox and Western Churches. The paper will explore how Khomiakov transformed a deeply personal expression of a father's grief into a tool for diplomatic dialogue between the two religious traditions.
