Discussion

This paper presents findings from a digital ethnography examining public reactions to LGBT-related news in Russia, as expressed on various Telegram channels. Drawing on both qualitative and quantitative analysis of discussions and comments, the study explores the dynamics of discourse surrounding LGBT issues in a socio-political context where such topics are highly contentious. The research focuses on Telegram due to its significance as a semi-anonymous platform in Russia, offering a space where users can engage more freely than on mainstream social networks. Key themes emerging from the data include polarization of opinions, the prevalence of homophobic rhetoric, the framing of LGBT identities in relation to “Western influence,” and occasional expressions of support or solidarity despite the risks associated with such views. By employing digital ethnographic methods, the study uncovers the ways in which anonymity, platform affordances, and broader socio-political factors shape the public’s engagement with LGBT news in Russia, offering insights into the intersection of technology, media, and cultural resistance.
