Our reseach delves into the intricate realm of Russian universities, shedding light on their identity crisis within the global knowledge landscape. Amid the dynamics of globalization and the imperatives of a knowledge-based economy, Russian higher education institutions have faced unprecedented challenges. The identity of these universities is shaped by a complex interplay of factors, including their historical roots, institutional diversity, and interactions within the global and local academic milieu. The quest for international recognition and the associated drive to establish a presence on the global stage have led to multifaceted transformations in the identity of these universities. However, the extent to which these institutions successfully navigate these changes varies, depending on their disciplinary profiles and their ability to adapt to global and local demands. Our research showcases the impact of these challenges on identity and institutional practices, emphasizing that institutions specializing in different academic fields and status face dilemmas in their pursuit of global and local legitimacy. Bibliometric analyses provide valuable insights into the publication profiles and international integration of Russian universities. The data reveal a divergence in the publication output of universities. It urges these institutions to navigate the identity challenge strategically, adapt to changing demands even if they are contradictory by nature.
