The roundtable focuses on the modern history of the Caucasus and Central Asia and aims to provide a space at the BASEES conference for scholars, early-career researchers and doctoral students engaged or interested in the study of these regions.

The study of the Caucasus and Central Asia is often siloed, with researchers focusing either on one region or the other, despite much that these two regions have in common. The roundtable will explore what connects these two regions and how these connections can be researched. It builds on previous academic events dedicated to the two regions held at the European Society for Central Asian Studies and Central Eurasian Study Society, both of which took place in 2017. This roundtable will provide an examination of what has been done since then to bring research on the two regions together and outline the ways forward.

The roundtable will feature perspectives on the Caucasus and Central Asia from the Tsarist, Soviet and post-Soviet periods, as well as on the intra-imperial connections between the two regions and their connections with other neighbouring countries and regions.
