Discussion

The paper will investigate the impact of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine on internally displaced Ukrainian women. The project seeks to uncover how women’s daily lives have been impacted by Russia’s invasion; the particular challenges they have faced and continue to face; the support they view as most important at this time; and their perspectives regarding peace and the reconstruction of Ukraine. This research project is therefore both timely and critical as it seeks to document and uncover the most current views of Ukrainian citizens still living amidst the conflict. The project is also essential for elevating the voices of Ukrainian citizens, who have been noticeably absent from much of the international discourse around the war and possible directions forward. The impact of this project accordingly lies in the fact that it can help both academics and policymakers globally better understand the experience of war for citizens, and women in particular, as well as possible scenarios for achieving a sustainable peace in the region in both the short- and long-term.

The paper will be based on qualitative and quantitative methods to holistically examine the experiences of women internally displaced in different regions of Ukraine since 24 February 2022. The paper will present the results of a survey with 1000 respondents and 50 in-depth interviews with women displaced from Ukraine’s East, South, and North conducted in August-September 2023 by the author.

This presemntation will be based on the presentation of the paper co-authored by me and Dr Marnie Howlett (Departmental Lecturer in Russian and East European Politics, Oxford School of Global and Area Studies (OSGA), Department of Politics and IR (DPIR), University of Oxford)?
