In this paper I aim to develop a set of tools to examine the symbolic structure of the anti-Western posture of the Russian state. Relying on an analysis of texts published by Russia’s most prestigious journal of international relations – Russia in Global Affairs – I identify several key elements of the anti-Western and anti-liberal stance that has developed in Russia over course of the past two decades. Among these stances is a growing rejection of the Western world order, a call for the return of a strong state, and a pursuit of “indigenous” Russian values and culture.
