Discussion

The collapse of the anti-Russian January Uprising caused many Poles disillusioned with the revolutionary means of struggle for national liberation to lean towards conservatism. The late nineteenth century in partitioned Poland is characterized by the influence of intellectuals associated with the Galician conservative Jesters circle and the Cracow Historical School. While this faction of Polish intelligentsia sought an agreement with the Habsburg Empire, the Russian Empire pushed Pan-Slavism as a legitimization of its want to subjugate Slavic nations. This presentation is an attempt to show how authors associated with Galician conservatism referred to the ideas of Pan-Slavism and their Russian connections.
