The Life of Constantine-Cyril (VC) was originally written in Greek, but is only preserved in an Old Church Slavonic translation, the first copy of which is dated 1469 (Vladislav Grammatik, Zagreb). This means, that we have to deal with roughly 600 years of undocumented text transfer from Constantine-Cyril's dead 869 in Rome to the first appearance of a copy of the VC. According to several commentators, the VC must have been composed by using the official conversation protocols which had been produced for the Emperor's knowledge and file storage as documentation of Cyril's official diplomatic tasks. The paper discusses different reasons confirming the use of official documents for composing the VC, and also compares the translation technique used in the VC with the translation technique known from S. Cyril and Methodius and their students. In conclusion, the paper offers the best guess on the author of the VC.
