Discussion

This presentation analyzes public discourses of Jewish communities in Ukraine in social and mass media during the first year of the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine, 24.02.2022-24.02.2023. It is shown that the main war-related discourse refers to unequivocal support of Ukraine. There were various ways to express this discourse that included those of content, visual support and linguistic tools, and I grouped them in two categories: counteracting propaganda and staying in Ukraine, and demonstrating double identity (Jewish and Ukrainian). Diversity of tools within each category shows rather grassroot initiatives taken by the communities rather than any directives from above. Results of this research could help general understanding of the place of the Jewish communities in Ukrainian society as well as shedding light on contemporary processes of integration and disintegration in the times of danger.
