Discussion

This paper explores the intersection of religious extremism and anti-LGBTQI+ counter movements in Romania, in the context of Europeanisation. Employing a multi- methodological approach that incorporates discourse theory, legal analysis, and gender studies, we scrutinise how religious ideologies inform and fuel discriminatory practices and policies against the LGBTQI+ community. Research reveals that religious extremism has been instrumental in sabotaging legislative efforts aimed at improving LGBTQI+ rights and has contributed in perpetuating social, political, and medical stigmas and prejudices. We further analyse how various religious groups mobilise resources and influence both public opinion and policy decisions at a national level, taking full advantage of their transnational links with global anti-gender actors. Furthermore, this paper will consider the obligations the Romanian state has undertaken to implement non-discriminatory legislation that aligns with European values and the successive executives’ failure to keep its promises. The research ultimately argues that any effort to advance LGBTQI+ rights in Romania must critically engage with the country’s religious landscape, advocating for a more nuanced understanding of the relationship between faith and social justice. It further argues that religious belief does not confer an automatic right to discriminate. The study concludes with recommendations aimed at activists, policymakers, and researchers to counter the negative impacts of religious extremism on LGBTQI+ rights in Romania.
