Discussion

At the end of the 20th century, fundamental socio-cultural changes took place in Ukraine: the weakening of total state control in the late 1980s and the subsequent collapse of the USSR, the democratization of social and political life, the liberalization of the economy, the transformation of societal values, the formation of market relations and the emergence of the private sector. All these processes influenced significant institutional changes in Ukrainian culture. The state of the Ukrainian art scene since the end of the 20th century can be defined as permanent “transformation”, which has been a feature of its development for the past thirty years. Its accelerated integration into the global art system is self-evident. The birth and development of a new, capitalist model for the functioning of culture and its artistic institutions from the ruins of a socialist one has opened up new opportunities for artists and contributed to the development of diversity of artistic pursuits.

This paper will briefly describe the process of art institutionalization, which has been rapidly developing on the territory of Ukraine, as well as in other post-Soviet countries. It will examine its stages and particular features. In addition, the paper will allude to the changes in state attitude toward contemporary art, which was reflected in the level of state support.
