Discussion

How useful are scholarly engagements with the post-colonial perspective for understanding changes in religion in the post-Soviet contexts? Although not new, this question has recently been brought into sharp relief by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This paper considers this question by looking into the ethical and methodological concerns as well as conceptual tools found in the postcolonial scholarship. From this background, it then explores available evidence and approaches from other perspectives by looking into three cases: the establishment of the autocephalous Orthodox Church of Ukraine, studies of Islam in Russia, and the situation of Buddhism in Kalmykia.
