Discussion

English lexemes for computer-related terminology are used by and large in colloquial Macedonian. For most of these English words there are Macedonian translation equivalents, but these are hardly ever used. This paper analyses student translations of an English text dealing with everyday computer terminology into Macedonian and discusses the findings. The study aims to explore whether students actually come up with the Macedonian equivalents during the translation task, bearing in mind the formality of the setting and knowing that untimed written translation tasks allow for longer processing time. The reasons why students sometimes resort to using English words (transcribed with Macedonian Cyrillic alphabet) even when there exists a Macedonian translation equivalent are also investigated. Finally, the study aims to discover to what extent these loanwords from English adapt to the Macedonian morphology and how they blend in the syntactic structure of Macedonian.
