Discussion

The paper will focus on the national discourse promoted by Ukrainian national communists in Subcarpathian Rus during the 1920s, situated within the broader context of the 'Ukrainian question' within the Comintern. The primary emphasis of this paper, however, will be the extent of autonomy enjoyed by the Subcarpathian Ruthenian communists in articulating their national position. This includes their right to self-determination up to secession and their demands for the annexation of eastern Slovakia (comprising Zemplín, Spiš, Šariš, and Gemer counties) to Subcarpathian Rus. The paper will contain a detailed analysis of the public and political statements made by members of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia in Subcarpathian Rus. Additionally, it will delve into their ideological background, as well as their political and propaganda strategies. Special attention will be given to the influence of Ukrainian national communist ideology from the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic on shaping the rhetoric of the Subcarpathian Ruthenian Communists.
