Analysis of the University research culture reveals the institution does not offer the same opportunities for all, and this is particularly apparent in STEM subjects. Data show some scientists (e.g. Black, Minority Ethnic, women) face additional barriers along their career journey, which can diminish success and aspirations for success. In the College of Science and Engineering we are working with Social Scientists to understand the nature of the barriers and evolve ways of working that create a fairer, more diverse and inclusive environment. We will examine some of the ongoing initiatives, and also what plants can teach us about mentoring and supporting faculty development.
