An important characteristic of 1968 globally was the articulation of new critiques of systemic violence.  The Prague Spring developed out of such a critique and inspired citizens in neighbouring countries for this reason, while the Spring's violent suppression radicalized the critique in ways that laid the foundations for the non-violent and transnational dissident movements of the 1970s and 1980s.   Focusing on East Germany, Hungary, and Poland, this paper examines the development of transnational solidarity among central European citizens over the course of the Prague Spring and in the year following the Warsaw Pact intervention.
