This paper explores stories from Ukraine in 1932 and 1933. This is practice based research as a result of my PhD work. This is from six years of research in this field. My work includes interviews with historians and experts with connections to Holodomor and Ukrainian histories. These interviews are: Ukrainian British baker Jerry Prytulak, Phil Colley, great nephew of journalist Gareth Jones, historian and academic Serhii Plokhii, scholar from Cambridge University Daria Mattingly and a collection of letters by Jerry Berman in collaboration with Alison Marshall. This includes an audio interview with reverend Volodymyr Sampara. These interviews form audio for five short films. These use animation, motion graphics and TV production. They draw upon professional research and my former career in TV production.
I am referencing from literature and film. This includes writing by Svetlana Alexievich, Rainer Maria Rilke and poet Rumi. I explore auto- ethnographic research and structures of poetic forms. My visual interpretations include a collection of maps of Gareth Jones’ journey. Jones explored Ukraine in 1932 and 1933 and reported from Holodomor. I explore methods of cartographic regression. These appear in discussion by artistic group Forensic Architecture in their Cloud Studies exhibition 2021. I am creating mainstream outcomes for
