Winged phrases from Soviet films are an inherent part of native Russian speakers’ linguistic repertoire and they form an element of modern Russian national identity, which can be viewed as a new Russian folklore genre (Kabiak 2019). For this reason, a greater emphasis should be placed on teaching such phrases to foreign students to develop their media, linguistic and cultural competence. The paper discusses various approaches to teaching winged phrases in Russian-as-a-foreign-language classroom and provides practical examples. It outlines challenges that language instructors may face, such as the modern contexts for winged phrases usage and transformations of such phrases. It is argued that it is necessary for winged phrases from Soviet films to be included within compulsory programme for students preparing for Russian-as-a-foreign-language exams at levels B2 – C2.
