Discussion

Dependency theory has its roots in Latin America history and experience of peripheral countries in global capitalism. Modernisation theory comes from experiences of centre, most developed countries and was presented as a receipe for post-colonial countries after second world war.

Characteristics of modernisation perspective were common in neoliberal transformation in Visegrad Group countries. Pressure on imitations of solutions proposed by institutions which dominant position had the most developed countries was visible. However, dependency theory perspective, which could be useful thanks to its experience of analyses of position of peripheral countries in global capitalism was totally absent.

In my paper I want to show where are the differences between dependency and modernisation theory and why the former can be useful to analyse situation in Visegrad Group countries not only during neoliberal transformation but also now, where all countries of V4 are member states of European Union.
