In this paper I will discuss the first events in the emergence of lesbian and gay community organising in Estonia in the context of Estonian national liberation movement from 1988 until 1993. The main of purpose of the paper is to outline how national and homosexual human right discourses separated in Estonia already in 1990, its preceded and followed to this moment. I will start by concluding the media debates on AIDS and homosexuality from 1988–1990 that were the first free debates on homosexuality since the interwar period. I will refer to oral history interviews with some of the the first activists as well as archival sources that document the first lesbian and gay community events and goals in organising. Third part of the paper focuses on and on archival study about two international conferences in 1990 where homosexual rights in Estonia were discussed, and that led to a conflict between heterosexist nationalists and homosexual minority.
