Auschwitz is a subject that has been written about extensively not just in academia but outside it as well. Over the past ten years, the number of popular history and fiction books written about Auschwitz have become something of a phenomenon. The problem here is how accurate are these books? Most of them have not been written by historians but by journalists and authors. Their research is very different from that of a historian, so does this affect the facts or the knowledge that the reader gains? The authors would argue that their books get people talking about Auschwitz and the Holocaust in general, but does this outweigh the huge number of inaccuracies and lack of proper research in these popular books? Not all books are so inaccurate but as survivors are starting to pass, it becomes more and more important to document all these histories, Unfortunately, they are being mass produced without proper care, and they tend to cause damage and promote false histories.
