Discussion

"A Multilingual Repository of Phraseme Constructions in Central and Eastern European Languages" (PhraConRep) is a project for creating a digital multilingual dictionary of phraseme constructions (PhC). PhC consist of one or more lexically fixed elements (anchors) and one or more open slots. The slots are filled by lexical elements (fillers) during text production, according to lexical, grammatical, communicative, and intonational rules. PhC have an abstract overall meaning that is usually idiomatic. PhC must be learned and memorised as a whole by language learners. PhC pose a challenge for learners and language teachers, translators and programmers of automatic translation software. Despite their high frequency in language use, PhC often pass by unnoticed, making them a potential point of misunderstanding for non-native speakers. The development of increasingly powerful tools to store and process digital language texts has opened up new possibilities regarding the study of linguistic patterns. PhC are very frequent and particularly widespread in informal registers of speech, which makes them important for the mastery of spoken language. PhCon Repository ultimately focusses on the didactics, translatability and typology of multi-word units across languages.
