Discussion

Tracing a path that evokes comparisons with Walter Crane, Hermann Muthesius, and other politically active European artists of the Arts and Crafts Movement, Ukrainian graphic designer Heorhiy Narbut moved from working with the aesthetically-minded “World of Art” group in St Petersburg to take up a central role in Kyiv shaping the visual identity of the Ukrainian People's Republic [Ukrainska Narodna Respublika] formed in 1917. This paper examines how Narbut's shifts in iconography, interests, and artistic contacts between the fin de siècle and the Revolution point to a diversity of practice that invites interpretation in a transnational context, and, specifically, analysis of relations between art and politics that so often characterised Arts and Crafts revival.
