While scientific literature has shown limited interest in transregional links between the countries of the South and the East, several contemporary artists have investigated transregional solidarity of left-wing movements of the 1960s and 1970s, particularly as part of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), through their work. Such examples include the exhibition “Past Disquiet. Narratives and Ghosts from the International Art Exhibition for Palestine, 1978” (2015) curated by Rasha Salti and Kristine Khouri which recuperated the stories of several solidarity-related museum initiatives of the 1970s: The International Resistance Museum Salvador Allende, the Artists of the World against Apartheid, Art for the People of Nicaragua, the Salon de Jeune Peinture, the International Brigades of Anti-Fascist Painters, the Japan Afro-Asian Latin American Artists Association and the 1974 and 1976 Arab Biennials (Exhibition Past Disquiet). In this context, this paper proposes an analysis as part of the focus on “cultural transnationalism” between the South and the East, or of the “Socialist Second World” through the analysis of the relationship between the Chilean Museum of Solidarity (1970) and the Romanian communist regime of Nicolae Ceausescu. In fact, the Romanian example invalidates the model of artists acting in solidarity with the socialist artists of Chile and supports the possibility of the institutionalization and politicization of the cultural field by the socialist state.
