Discussion

The Memorial Centre “Lipa Remembers” (the municipality of Rijeka) is dedicated to the one event of the World War II history – to the massacre of 30 April 1944 when 269 inhabitants of Lipa were killed by Nazi Army Corps. It is the only memorial museum in ex-Yugoslav region that based the new concept of its permanent display on the auto-reflexive method according to which it allows visitor to discover the way in which this institution was built and how heritage was cultivated and communicated in Yugoslavia. Also, this is the singular museological consideration of the role of the museum in “transition” in the post-Yugoslav space.

In my presention, a special emphasis will be given to an audio installation in which the retired curator Danica Maljavac (and the first female child born in Lipa after WWII) explains the historical photographs of execution. It will be argued that this particular exhibit does not only represent the historical event but also warns the visitors that the museum itself is a place of history where the relation with the past can be explored.
