Discussion

The paper intends to highlight some morphosyntactic means and tendencies characterizing the northeastern Ukrainian dialects (also known as eastern Polissian) in relation to standard Ukrainian and other related East Slavic languages. The focus will be on the local dialects spoken in the northwestern part of the region of Chernihiv (Černihiv), and located in the proximity of the Belarusian and Russian borders. However, possible undergoing changes (dialectal dynamics) will be contextualized within the larger Northern Ukrainian dialectal area.

The aspects we are going to examine, also considered from a historic and typological viewpoint, are the following:

a) Types of subordination with particular reference to indirect questions;

b) The way to encode possession (possessive constructions);

c) Future tense (analytic vs synthetic).
