I will compare Soviet collectivization policies in Kazakhstan with the enormous expansion of the British plantation economy in Kenya in the 1930s. I will analyze the two kinds of modernity that were imposed on nomads and peasants in imperial areas during this seminal decade. I will also consider how individuals made the path from subsistence living to the city during these brutal transition periods.
