In Soviet history, we can mark 1921 as the first year during which life takes back a semblance of normality. Nep's introduction and the end of war communism were signs that the revolution's destructive phase was over and that it was time to construct a new society actively.

A new status quo developed in the economy, society, everyday life and, even more importantly, in culture and literature as the Party's monopoly was lifted.

One of the significant events of this epoch was the birth of the magazine "Krasnaja Nov", with which the Party hoped to direct the processes behind the forging of the new Soviet culture.

The paper examines the first publishing year of the magazine to identify its main tendencies in literature, literary criticism and cultural policy.

Our goal is to understand better what role "Krasnaja Nov" played in the unfolding cultural debate and how this role further evolved in the following years.
