Balkan studies emerged in the 19th century with only a few articles studying the region as a whole. In recent decades, scholarly literature has been expanding rapidly. In the Web of Science bibliographic database, there are more than 4500 articles written on the Balkans from the Social Sciences and Humanities. This work-in-progress project aims to systematically review and visually map a century-long bibliographic and semantic structure of the knowledge on the Balkans. We employ scientometric methods (direct citation analysis, co-word analysis, burst detection analysis) and various visualization tools (HistCite, CitNetExplorer, VOSviewer, Sci2 Tool) to explore the development history, thematic linkages, and research trends on the Balkan studies.
