Abstract: In the paper I will present the result of interviews with prisoners serving sentences in two prisons in western Romania. The research examines the relationship between prisoners form different ethnic backgrounds who are thrown together in the overcrowded and intense environment of the prison. The subjects include people who self-identify as Romanian, Hungarian and Roma and I examine the importance of group formation in their adjustment to life in prison. I discuss my findings against the background of incomplete penal reforms since the collapse of communism.
