Discussion

This roundtable considers alternative teaching and research methodologies in the field commonly known as Slavic Studies. Bringing together scholars/practitioners from cultural studies, literature, gender studies, translation studies and cultural history, this roundtable examines how the research and teaching that we undertake today both challenges and perpetuates the boundaries of researcher/researched, West/East, theory/case study. We explore how feminist and decolonial methodologies can problematize traditional research methods and teaching techniques when it comes to studying Eastern European contexts from a western institutional perspective. How can new methodologies problematise existing hierarchies in knowledge-production? How can we draw on innovative methods in the dynamic cultures of our studies and bring these ideas to bear on the way we write and talk about these cultures?
