During communist Yugoslavia, the catholic church was a guardian of the Croatian nation. A good example of this was the project of ‘the thirteen centuries of Christianity among the Croats’. It was a nine-year celebration and the culmination of it was the National Eucharistic Congress held in Marija Bistrica in 1984. The event had a great impact on the Croatian nation. The celebrations organized by the authorities took place in different places – also in Knin, Nin, Solin.
The paper aims to analyze the role of local Croatian communities from different parts of the country in the celebrations. Particular attention will also be paid to the symbolic and non-verbal layers. Data from a number of Croatian archival sources have been already examined. The following research methods were used: content analysis and discourse analysis (taking into account the approach to critical discourse analysis).
