One of the main outcomes of the process of liberalisation of Russian economy and politics is the emergence of private museums and cultural institutions. Usually funded by wealthy individuals and/or endowment funds, they have taken on the role of building collections, putting on exhibitions, carrying out research and organising public engagement activities in those areas which had been overlooked by publicly funded institutions. Recent examples include activities staged by the Jewish Museum, V-A-C foundation and Yeltsin Centre. Researchers invited to this round table discussion will examine new frameworks and practices of collaborative work with vulnerable communities such as migrant, LGBT and disabled communities. In addition to a reflection on these practices, speakers will provide theoretical considerations about the changing environment in the Russian Federation, including the privatisation of culture, social work, research and engagement.
